THE MATERIALITY OF DIGITAL CULTURE
Graphic Design Capstone Project
2019 — 2020
Materiality of Digital Culture was part of the Off Course Exhibition for DesignTO on January 2020.
In our technology-driven world, interactive media and virtual objects have become ingrained in material culture, changing our perception of the tactile experience. Materials seem to be experienced in a new and synthetic way; the interaction is no longer exclusively a tactile one, but instead a simulation of the material.
The Materiality of Digital Culture explores the intersection of digital culture and materiality in context to graphic design. Digitality, being one of the primary tools of the designer, can challenge the way in which we approach, manipulate and perceive materials. As we continue to question the notions of materiality, and their translation from the physical to the digital space, we begin to ask ourselves how to understand these spaces. How can technology itself be understood as a material, and be manipulated and materialized to work collaboratively with the designer?
This research project looks to initiate a dialogue around our perception of technology and materials, and the role of the designer, in order to bridge the boundaries between materials and digitality, and contribute to the discourse surrounding new materials and processess in design practices today.

Series of six interactive posters that “come to live” with the use of a touchscreen device,
through
Augmented Reality. Each of them with a quote from the Gutai Art manifesto, is a statement that highlights
the interaction between the human body and the materials that surround us.
Detail of Augmented Reality.

Digital Materiality
This digital experience proposes an interactive way of experiencing the digital-physical realm. Through the random arrangement and collaging of various textures and material images, our senses of space, perception, and touch are challenged. By tracing and paying attention to the details of each image, we can reflect upon the complex nature of materials, prompting us to question their essence and examine the material’s meaning.
